Detecting Breast Cancer to Save a Life

When thinking about the people in life that we love the most; that we try hardest to protect and that we'd be lost without, we tend to think of the women in our lives. It is our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, wives, daughters and other special women that we feel the most protective over. Unfortunately, they are also the people most likely to be diagnosed withe breast cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Luckily, breast cancer does not have to be a life sentence. Detecting it early equals a greater chance of survival. Cancer in the breast can be detected by self breast exams (SBE), clinical breast exams (CBE) and mammograms. Taking the time to learn about breast cancer and informing others can help save a life of the people we love.

Self breast exams should be done monthly after the woman's menstrual cycle. There are several steps to performing a SBE. First, without a shirt or bra on, a woman should examine her breasts in the mirror looking for warning signals such as lumps, dimpling, discharge or any other sudden changes in the appearance of the breast. Continue looking at the breasts with both arms above the head. Second, lying down with the right arm overhead, use the three middle fingers of the left hand to feel around the right breast. Starting at the nipple and moving outward, make circular motions around the breast using light pressure, then medium pressure and hard pressure. Next, using the same fingers, feel the breast in lines going up and down the breast from the nipple. Switch the arm and the hand and redo the steps on the left breast. Although doing SBE's is not the recommended method for finding breast cancer, it is highly important in helping women know what is normal for their breast and their body while helping to spot any changes.

To assist in early detection, women over 20 are also encouraged to get clinical breast exams (CBE) by their doctor every three years and every year after age 40. The process of a CBE is much like that of a SBE only it is done by a trained medical professional.

While self breast exams and clinical breast exams are important factors in detecting breast cancer, the most effective tool is a mammogram. Mammograms are recommended yearly for women over 40.

The best detection method is to use all three of this exams together as recommended.

While early detection is helpful to survive breast cancer, there are also steps that can be taken to prevent it. A person can help to prevent breast cancer by limiting alcohol consumption to 1 drink a day, exercising regularly, knowing their body and knowing their family history.

Together, we can educate all of the special women in our lives and encourage them to start a breast exam schedule.

Female genital mutilation in Pakistan, and beyond

Warning: The following article contains information that readers may find uncomfortable or disturbing to read
“Female genital mutilation is a torture, not a culture.” Alice Walker
According to the World Health Organisation, female genital mutilation (FGM) is defined as all “procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.”

The process is carried out for a wide number of reasons, none of which have positive health implications. As a social cause, young girls and their families are pressurized to surrender to the tradition of FGM that has been carried out for generations.

People who practice female genital mutilation are motivated by the belief that by mutilating the female genitalia, a girl will feel no difficulty in resisting “illicit” sexual acts. Moreover, the fear of experiencing pain that comes with the opening of the stitches of the narrowed/covered vaginal opening is said to prevent further “illicit” relations amongst women and men.

However, women who have been through the ordeal of FGM have clarified that the practice has not benefited them in any way. In fact, it is the source of incredibly painful ordeals throughout pregnancy, childbirth and intercourse.

The sad reality, however, is that although FGM is widely common in African countries, most people are unaware that this brutal practice is in Pakistan too.

What happens in Pakistan

In Pakistan, the act of FGM is practiced amongst select areas and communities – one example being the Bohra Muslims. There are roughly about 100,000 Bohra Muslims in the country, mostly in the southern regions of Pakistan, such as Sindh. In recent years, due to a rise in strict sect religious compliance by the Bohra Muslims, the practice of FGM has increased. Unless the Bohra chief, known as Dai, issues a decree to forbid the act, the practice will remain firmly rooted in the people’s culture and will continue to be practiced.

Countless news reports from all over the world have provided sound proof to support the immense damage that FGM can cause.

Take, for instance, the news report about a girl who went through the traumatic ordeal of FGM at the age of six – a fact uncovered at age 12, when doctors were investigating what they thought was a cyst. However, the girl had become infertile due to years of menstrual blood being blocked, prevented from leaving her body due to the stitching of her vaginal opening.

Another report mentioned a story of a woman who went for a check-up. The midwife was examining her and suddenly ran out of the room, retching and crying after she saw the state of the patient’s genitals.

It is not just the young women of Pakistan but also British girls of Pakistani origin who are subjected to this procedure. Young British girls pack their bags with their favourite outfits, books and toys and jump with joy at the thought of six weeks of holiday with their relatives. However, many young girls are unaware that their parents are taking them to Pakistan to carry out the FGM procedure.

What clerics say

Since the State of Pakistan is an Islamic country, let’s take a look at what Islam says about the practice.

To begin with, the Holy Quran does not bear even a single mention of female circumcision. In addition to this, there is no Hadith that mandates this practice. However, some have argued that one Hadith, although not requiring it, appears to accept the practice:

“Circumcision is a commendable act for men (Sunnah) and is an honourable thing for women” (Makromah).
This Hadith is criticised on the grounds that a distinction is made between male circumcision, which is described in a stronger way, whilst a weaker explanation is offered for female circumcision, which is not required religiously.

But ask yourself: how is cutting or partially/completely removing parts of the female genitalia an honourable thing for women? What is it that makes it honourable? Is it the pain or the abnormal sight of a mutilated body?

The glaring fact is that this practice leads to a tremendous amount of pain, infections, a battle with child birth, infertility in women, and in severe cases, even death.

Sheikh Talib, Dean of the Faculty of Shariah of Al Azhar, has said:
“all practices of female circumcision and mutilation are crimes and have no relationship with Islam.”
This statement is supported by the fact that the procedure of FGM pre-dates the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the beginning of Islam.

FGM is not something that “purifies” a woman or preserves their virginity. It is a practice that mutilates a woman’s body and damages her in the most appalling of ways. Parents who hold their daughters’ arms and legs down, forcing them to go through this terrible crime, are not maintaining their family’s honour. They are, in fact, severely reducing the chances of their daughter’s bearing children. They are, thus, eliminating opportunities that may bless them with future generations and eventually, they will have no trace of themselves on earth.

Once again, from an Islamic perspective, God creates men and women alike, in the best design possible. Surely, it is wrong to alter the design that God has put together in the human form. Everyone has the right to respect their body and demand the same respect from everyone else. No one, regardless of whether they are parents or so-called health professionals, has the right to destroy a woman’s ability to bear children or damage her body. FGM is, hence, a crime, sitting at the top rung of immorality.

Perhaps, a young girl is screaming in pain right, at this very moment, as you read this article.

However, it is not too late – we can still make a difference.

We can rise up, and raise our voices for those innocent girls whose families have FGM in plan for them. One voice may not be loud enough but when an entire assembly of voices resound together, it makes a difference and causes peoples’ heads to turn. Let us, thus, rise up together, and put a stop to this torture.

10 things I hate about communication in 2011

Ever wondered what life was like before we got so dependent on computers?

Yes, we wrote letters that took weeks to reach. We wondered who could be calling when we answered our landlines that had no call waiting or caller ID and left messages on answering machines or voice mail. And as we didn’t write random texts, emails or tweets on the spur of the moment; those of us in school scribbled notes passed around class.

Today, we rely heavily upon email, social networking, text messaging, Skype and mobile Internet browsing to support our daily interactions with our virtual communities. However, these in turn present their own set of grievances:

10. Morons:

Regretting “liking” an acquaintance’s FB status after receiving your 30th ‘beep’ notification of the day. Some moron you don’t know from Adam has commented “LOLZ” beneath the status that you ‘liked.’ Note to self: never comment on a local celebrity’s status or someone who has more than 500 Facebook friends.

9. Prank callers:

Hang up calls from prank callers hoping you’ll call them back because they’re too cheap to spend a rupee harassing you. The solution? Answer at the first ring and hang up so they get charged (take that, cheapskates!). As for persistent harassers for whom stalking comprises their primary entertainment, inexpensive SIM cards keep them in business to call from different numbers after you keep getting them blocked. It’s an uphill battle.

8. General cheapness:

“For a good time call Rabia Jaan” phone card scams. There must be some desperate losers out there who fall for it (prank callers, we hope) for there to be so many of these text messages floating around that reportedly siphon off pre-paid balances.

7. Chain mail:

Yet another chain message on email and BBM cursing us with 7 days of bad luck if we don’t forward the asterisk filled message to 7 people in the next 7 minutes. Or it could be a religious chain message damning us to hell if we don’t forward it to 10 people in 10 minutes. And we continue to get them, despite apologies from senders who are too superstitious to not succumb to the empty threat at the bottom of the message or the promise of being ‘kissed’ by their true love. Ugh.

6. Scams:

You’ve won a billion pounds in the lottery, now hand over your account number, you unsuspecting dimwit. Sigh. So annoying.

5. Spellings:

Text messages about “tution” centres and “exulusive” exhibitions are hardly impressive when they can’t even get their spellings right.

4. Network issues

Number blocking services (like Mobilink’s 420) is a God send in theory but a nightmare in reality. Forget about the labyrinth like menu— I have been subscribing to it for over two weeks and they’ve been unable to block a single number that persistently sends grammatically challenged texts at the unwelcome times of 8am and 11pm daily. Not only that, but every time I complain about it, my network explains that they are looking into it and will call me back except they have been unable to get through to my number all week. “And whose fault is that,” I say not too sweetly, “It’s YOUR network!”

3. Server issues:

The server is “down” because:

a) PTCL is taking several months to lay new cables and didn’t bother alerting subscribers.

b) It rained for all of five minutes, which is what it takes in Pakistan to disrupt everything from WAPDA to PIA to cable TV to roads.

2. Mass messages:

Mass Eid messages from people who send them to everybody on their list yet expect a personalized reply. I love getting all the love, but, really? We may be too lazy to buy cards, sign them in our handwriting and snail mail them, but we can at least personalize a text message or e-card, can’t we?

1. Lies:

Since Facebook and Twitter are blocked on our so-called Smartphones, let’s rename them Fundophones.

At least we know what to expect.

The truth about period pain

The science lesson in which we covered human biology focused primarily on puberty – things would change, we were told in a serious voice: hair would grow in new places, breasts would sprout, shoulders would broaden and voices would break. Girls were informed of the menarche – their first menstrual cycle – one of approximately 500 over the course of a lifetime. We were told to expect "some discomfort", but given no hint that for some this pain would go beyond mild and descend into pretty damn awful.

Period pain is caused by contractions in the uterus. The blood vessels in the muscle wall are compressed by the contractions, which cut off blood supply to the womb, starving it of oxygen and adding to the discomfort.

Dysmenorrhea, as period pain is medically known, generally falls into two camps: secondary dysmenorrhea is caused by a specific underlying condition such as endometriosis (when cells that normally line the uterus are found at other sites in the body – usually the ovaries and fallopian tubes). The more common primary dysmenorrhea, which affects nine out of 10 women, has no specific cause. It is generally worst in the first few years after starting your period, with symptoms tending to improve with age or after childbirth. Yet many women who report having primary dysmenorrhea well into their 20s and 30s say their pain is dismissed.

My request for painful period stories brought a barrage of responses. A colleague said she experienced such agony she collapsed in the street. Two women wrote to tell me their GP had told them they were exaggerating how painful it was ("I get such cramps . . . there's nothing that makes the pain less"), while another with endometriosis had been told by her mother (who also suffered from the condition) that the pain was "normal". I suffered such cramps and other symptoms – vomiting, migraines – that I routinely missed school as a teenager.

Researchers at Oxford University recently found that women with painful periods show increased sensitivity to pain (and lower levels of cortisol, the hormone released by the body in times of stress) throughout their cycles – not just when they are menstruating.

Yet Deborah Mason, from Wellbeing of Women, a charity that has been funding research into all aspects of reproductive health since 1964, says there is little new information in the area – partly because women don't complain. "Too often we don't want to make a fuss and this is one of the reasons why so little research is done in this area," she says. "If period pain is preventing you from continuing your normal activities for more than a few hours, seek medical advice. Just because period pain has been around for millions of years doesn't mean women should suffer in silence."

Marilyn Glenville, a nutritionist specialising in women's health, agrees. "I think women still don't know how much they can ask for," she says."Women should know that they can be referred to a gynaecologist – and not just be fobbed off with painkillers when there may be an underlying cause or something else that could be done to actually treat the problem."

Yet Gabrielle Downey, a consultant gynaecologist, says things are getting better. "GPs are much more aware of quality-of-life issues," she says. "If it's interfering with a woman's life, we need to get that under control." And she says there's a logical progression to follow in treatment. "Mefenamic acid [an anti-inflammatory] is specifically for period pain. If you don't get better with that and/or the pill, you should be investigated to make sure you don't have an underlying condition," she says. "If it's not endometriosis, I'd prescribe the pill for three months and see if that helps. If that doesn't work, the next step is giving something like Implanon – the contraceptive that is progesterone-only – so you don't have periods, or a Mirena coil, which gets rid of the lining of the womb so there's less bleeding and less pain."

And if all this doesn't work? "If you fail to respond to medical treatment, you need a laparoscopy to make sure we're not missing something."

Glenville, meanwhile, suggests that the anti-inflammatory effect of omega-3 fish oils mean they can lessen the cramping. While Helen Knox, a qualified nurse specialist and director of Sexplained, a resource that promotes safer sexual and reproductive health, says women should listen to advice to take the pill. "A lot of women say they don't want to take hormones. You're only taking what your body makes anyway, in a synthetic form, and at a controlled level. The pill has so many non-contraceptive benefits but it doesn't get promoted properly. Spending a little bit of time with someone who's a specialist in that area helps."

Phone hacking: full list of the victims identified so far

Who was targeted by the News of the World?

The revelation that murder victim Milly Dowler's phone was hacked is the latest, and perhaps most shocking of the seemingly endless list of victims covering every area of British life.

Victims include actor Sienna Miller, the actor and comedian Steve Coogan and Who Wants to Be A Millionaire Host Chris Tarrant, who have joined the growing list of public figures taking legal action for alleged phone hacking by the News of the World.

There are broadly three categories of people who have been identified as victims or possible victims of phone hacking by Glenn Mulcaire, the News of the World's private investigator. Although the total number of names runs into the thousands, few so far have been identified.

First, there are those who have been approached and warned by Scotland Yard that there was hard evidence of their voicemail being accessed without authority. Some were warned at the time of the original inquiry in 2006. Others were warned only after the Guardian revived the story in July 2009. Scotland Yard refuse to say how many were warned at either time. They have said that they also approached and warned people in four 'national security' categories if there was reasonable grounds to suspect that their voicemail might have been accessed without authority - members of the royal household, the military, the police and the government. But here again, they refuse to say how many people they warned in each of those categories.

Second, there are those who have taken the initiative to approach Scotland Yard and to ask whether the police hold any evidence that they were targeted in any way by Mulcaire. Scotland Yard are holding the results of an analysis of phone records which, we now know, revealed "a vast number" of people who had had their voicemail accessed; and also a spreadsheet which summarises the contents of the mass of paperwork, audio tapes and computer records which police seized from Mulcaire and which, the Guardian discovered, included 4,332 names or partial names; 2,987 mobile phone numbers; 30 audio tapes of varying length; and 91 PIN codes of a kind which are needed to access voicemail with the minority of targets who change the factory settings on their mobile phones.

Third, there are 120 people who were identified by three mobile phone companies who followed up on Scotland Yard's original investigation and found that some of their users had had their voicemail accessed from numbers used by Glenn Mulcaire. Orange say they warned none of those whom they identified; Vodafone say they warned customers 'as appropriate'; O2 say they warned all of their customers whom they identified.

Victims so far identified in any of these three categories are below. We will update this list as more revelations emerge.

7 Surprising Workout Mistakes You Don't Know You're Making

If regular sweat sessions aren't scoring you the results you were hoping for, it's probably because you're guilty of these exercise no-nos. Tweak your habits and you'll be torching more fat just in time for shorts and tank top season.

Busting your ass on the Stairmaster and banging out a gazillion crunches and squats isn't going to do, well, squat, if you're making these common mistakes, according to personal trainer and fitness expert Louis Coraggio. And what's more, he says most women make at least one, if not more, of the seven errors listed below. Luckily, they're easy to correct, and once you make the fixes, you can spend less time at the gym and shed more pounds.

Mistake #1: You don't think about your tongue when you do sit-ups.

Yeah, we know it sounds strange, but hear us out. Women tend to use their neck muscles more than their abs when they do crunches. Totally uncomfortable, not to mention a huge waste of time. Shift the focus back to your abdominals with this trick: Press your tongue flush against the roof of your mouth before starting your reps. It helps keep the strain off of your neck so your stomach is forced to do the work.

Mistake #2: You stretch before cardio.

There's no danger in sitting on a mat and trying to touch your toes, but it's kinda boring and doesn't do much for your bod. The best way to warm up your muscles and prevent injury before going on a run or jumping on the Elliptical is to mimic the exercise at a low level. So get on the machine you're about to use, set it at the easiest level, and exercise for about five minutes. Then start to increase the level until you're at the desired speed or difficulty. This is way better than stretching, since it gets your heart rate elevated and helps avoid burnout.

Mistake #3: You lift the same weights every time.

Many women are under the impression that using heavy weights equals bulking up, so they stick with 10 or 15-pounders and don't increase. But if you're using free weights or weight machines once or more a week, you should be slowly upping the poundage. Since your muscles build up resistance over time, aim to increase the weight by about five pounds every two or three weeks. As long as you can do 15 without feeling anything more than fatigue (as in, you're not shaking, panting, or about to pass out), you don't have to worry about ending up with arms that could star in an action flick.

Mistake #4: You do real push-ups.

Modified push-ups (where your knees are on the ground) have long been considered the lazy girl's routine. The problem is that most women have a hard time doing the knees-off-the-ground version and when they try, their form ends up suffering, making the move sort of pointless. So go on, do the modified style and ignore the smug look from the girl next to you who has her knees up. (She's probably doing them wrong anyway!) Plant your arms directly below your shoulders and keep everything from your knees to your neck in a straight line as you slowly lower yourself to the ground. Trust us, you'll still get a kick-ass arm workout.

Mistake #5: You prep with a pre-gym snack.

Downing an energy bar before the gym can actually zap your energy. How come? Many of those bars are high in fiber, which is normally a good thing, but it takes forever to digest. And that digestion requires energy — energy that would be better spent on your muscles. You end up feeling sluggish and having trouble pushing yourself. If you're ravenous beforehand, opt for a banana, which is digested super quickly and won't inhibit your gym time. (Just steer clear of the apples many gyms offer at the front desk — they're high in fiber too.)

Mistake #6: You overindulge afterwards.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with replenishing yourself after a strenuous sweat session — in fact, it's recommended you get some protein and carbs in your system within an hour of working out. What you don't want is to totally undo all the hard work you just put in, which is extremely common. A recent study found that people tend to overestimate the number of calories burned and underestimate the number of calories consumed. To keep yourself from eating so much your workout becomes pointless, make sure you check the label of whatever you're eating and aim for something in the 150 calories or under range. (In other words, not that mega-muffin at the gym cafe.)

Mistake #7: You don't weigh yourself.

You might have been told not to worry about the number on the scale or heard that weighing yourself regularly is obsessive. But the scale is actually a key tool for ditching — and keeping off — fat. Experts have found that people who weigh themselves regularly lose more weight than those who don't. It could be because we can actually see the pounds come off (motivation to keep exercising) and we also get a concrete reminder that eating unhealthily for a week straight has consequences.

How to Feel Beautiful and Confident If You Are Plus Size

It is more challenging for plus size ladies to feel beautiful and confident when the images of beautiful gorgeous women portrayed in the mainstream media as super models who set the standards of beauty look nothing like them. How to be more confident and how to look beautiful if you are a plus size woman has nothing to do with how other people look at you or what other people think of you. Looking beautiful and feeling confident as plus size ladies is all about how you think of yourself.

Find Plus Size Women Role models

Queen Latifah and Monique are very beautiful sexy women who dare the media to think otherwise. Look at their make-up, stylish clothes and flirty attitudes. Queen Latifah is a Cover Girl with her one make-up line. Oscar winner, comedienne and talk show host, Monique wear sexy, fitted wrap dresses above her knees to show the world that plus size women can be very elegant, attractive and confident in her sexuality.

Build Self Confidence with these Affirmations:

Every night and every morning say this affirmation 3 times while looking in the mirror:

I am breathtakingly, mesmerizingly, captivatingly, intoxicatingly, irresistibly physically and spiritually beautiful. Both men and women are dazzled, stunned and spellbound by my extraordinary, unique, exotic beauty. I am the most beautiful woman in the world beyond compare.

I appreciate and recognize the beauty in others and they appreciate and recognize the beauty in me.

Change your Core belief about Body Size

If you have a negative tape in your head where you refer to yourself as fat or overweight and you say derogatory things about yourself, this is how other people will see you no matter how much make-up you wear or how much your plus size designer clothes cost. The way that you truly feel about yourself is how other people will see.

Take care of your Body

Building self-confidence comes from knowing that you eat a well-balanced healthy diet and that you exercise moderately each week. There is a huge difference between being overweight and plus size. An overweight person is a person who does not eat healthy and exercise. A plus size gorgeous beautiful woman is a woman who reasonably takes care of herself and this is the size that nature wants her to be.

How to Look Beautiful

Always make sure that your fingernails and toenails are manicured and polished. Wear beautiful bold, big earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. Plus size ladies should see themselves as a luscious canvas begging for bold colors and excitement.

If you have nice legs wear dress or skirts that show the generous curves in your calves. If you have a nice cleavage wear tops that gently reveal its soft, round, feminine beauty.

Real Life Horrible Bosses

Heinous higher-ups don't just exist in the movies. We found examples of actual people at the top of the ladder who make Jennifer Aniston's character seem not-so-bad.

"We have remote employees, so a lot of our meetings use new web conferencing software. My former boss, who by the way was totally lazy and was working from home that day, called in for the quarterly report via the software. Part of it includes a video component that allows everyone who calls in to see the others on the call. I guess my boss wasn't familiar with the functionality because a few minutes into the meeting he apparently started jerking off. I was in the office so I didn't see it, but the meeting ended super abruptly and the next day my boss resigned. One of my coworkers, who works remotely, said you couldn't see below the waist, but it was obvious what was going on. So it turns out he wasn't just a slacking jerk-off, but also a jerking-off slacker." —Kristina

"My old boss told me I had cankles. She was 'let go' two weeks later. #hellohumanresources" —Morgan

"I used to be a junior manager at my company, where I oversaw five employees. The guy above me managed me and three other junior managers. Last year he called me in to say that he'd be happy to take one of the people under me off my hands in order to give me more time to work on bigger projects. I thought it would be a cool way to grow at the company and get my feet wet in other areas so I happily agreed. A few days later I learned that in an attempt to cut costs, the company had decided to take away the manager title—and bonuses—from anyone who managed less than five people. My boss had known all along and—how convenient—he got to keep his title and I didn't." —Bri

"I was an office administrator at a small clinic and one day I logged on to the shared work computer that my boss occasionally used and accidentally opened his files instead of mine. It was a ton of porn. And then he got mad at me for finding the porn he had downloaded at work! Needless to say, I quit soon after." —Nicole

"My boss just told me that she's bringing crystals in for my desk to 'improve my aura'. And by the way, I work in the medical field." —Jennifer

"I had asked for my birthday off months in advance. My boss said it was fine so I made plans for that day. Then right before, he threatened to fire me if I didn't come into work!" —Lauren

"I went through all of high school and college without every experiencing mean girls. But when I started my first job out of grad school, I had my first encounter. Yes, she was my boss. The woman went out of her way to mentor all the other women in the office, but totally ignored me. And the cherry on top of the bitch cake was when she organized a holiday lunch and invited everyone who worked under her—except for me! When she walked by my cube later she said with a sick, faux sweet smile, 'I can not believe I left you off the email invite!' Then she turned and smugly flounced back to her office." —Lenora

"I had a manager who told me I was so pale, I should kill myself. Yep." —Kerry

"A former boss threatened to fire me because I caught him at the office making out with someone other his wife." —Kattie

"I'm a nanny in Texas, and one day last summer, the lady I worked asked me not to wear shorts or tank tops. It was 105 degrees almost every day so I asked why. She said that since she was a 'newly remarried woman', she was worried her husband's eyes might wander. Seriously, she expected me to wear jeans in Texas in the summer!" —Kelly

"I once had a boss who used to check my phone to see how many calls I missed. One time she actually attempted to write me up because I didn't return a call...from someone who hadn't even left a message." —Mel

"My manager once told me to take two days off because I was throwing up non-stop. She said she'd have my shifts covered, no problem. Then she called me a day later, screaming at me about not being there. When I reminded her what she'd said, she told me she was disappointed in me for thinking I could get away with this and how I'd ruined her whole week. Crazy bitch." —Megan

Why Women Hate Other Women

Women compete with each other at a societal level, the criteria for winning is usually set by others and the results are subjective and intangible. Women are usually judged by characteristics that they have little control over; something that they did not create, and that exist outside of themselves such as their physical appearance. Her success is based on subjective, biased, external validation by others. She can't see how to beat her rival because her rival is in no more control of the outcome than she is. How can you really be more beautiful than another woman, when the decision is nothing more than someone else's opinion of beauty?

How can you change someone's personal preference for a certain body size and shape, a particular eye color or a fondness for blondes? How many people are needed to think that you are beautiful before it is a valid or meaningful judgment? Who do you need to tell you that you are beautiful before you can believe it to be true... construction workers, truck drivers, the man walking down the street, your pastor, the Pope, your boss? Women compete with each other for male attention and compliments as if it feeds their self-worth and self-esteem. Women try to dress sexier and have shapelier bodies than other women.

Women instinctively know that men have little power when it comes to sexual intercourse in male and female relationships. Women know that if a platonic relationship exists between a male and a female, ninety percent of the time it is a platonic relationship because the woman does not want to have sex with the man instead of visa versa. Most women do not feel that men are psychologically or biologically capable of resisting another woman's sexual prowess because of their undying love, loyalty and respect for their committed relationship with them. If a man does not engage in a sexual relationship with a woman who is drop dead gorgeous, most women believe that it is because the other woman was in control of the outcome of the type of relationship. Women intuitively know that most heterosexual males find extraordinary beautiful women sexually irresistible and if that extraordinary beautiful woman wanted her man, he would be hers for the taking.

Women are so busy competing with each other for male attention that they do not have the psychological, intellectual or emotional insight to change the social climate that is causing them to suffer from low-self esteem. Women think of men as being promiscuous, unfaithful, lying, cheating dogs. But what most women need to come to grips with and understand is that research shows that a man is most likely to have a sexual affair with a woman's best friend, relative or neighbor... a woman whom she trusts, loves and respects. One of the reasons that men who cheat are so successful at it is because women allow them to because they are in competition with each other.

Women believe that they are superior to other women if they are physically more attractive. In a commercial for a diet pill a woman bragged, "I am now smaller than the woman my husband left me for." This statement leads me to believe that she felt that she deserved her husband's infidelity when she was over weight. Her motive for losing weight was to be physically smaller than the other woman that her husband left her for. She viewed the other woman as competition more so than feeling betrayed by her husband's disloyalty. The wife's motive for losing weight was not to improve the status of her health or increase her self-esteem but be smaller than her competition__ the other woman. The weight control commercial is blatantly telling women that they need to look a certain way in order to earn their husband's love and fidelity. It doesn't matter whether or not you cook his meals, raise his kids, and support his dreams... what matters most in a relationship is whether or not you are physically attractive enough to keep your man at home. There is an assumption that it is natural for a man to cheat on a woman who he feels is no longer sexually appealing. Many women believe that it is their fault when their husband or boyfriend cheats on them because they are not attractive enough to keep him faithful.

A woman's perception of self-worth is validated outside of her self from others and this affects her internal psychological concept of her own value as a human being. Women compete indirectly with other women because they have not learned how to recognize and channel their internal desires, feelings and goals into physical, tangible realities. Once women learn that they can not control or live vicariously through their children or the man in their life; they will stop hating each other and focus on their individual unique gifts, talents and assets.

Why do women hate other women?

1. Women feel that their biological prime-time is limited. She can easily be replaced by a new younger, more beautiful woman. Youth is a woman's fair-weathered friend.

2. Women feel that other women control their man's sexual fidelity.

3. Women feel that their level or degree of physical beauty is based on luck as opposed to something that she controls.

4. Women feel that other women can take something that they have worked hard to earn by using their beauty on the job, school and the legal system because men will be taken by her beauty.

5. Women feel that other women can not be trusted. They gossip too much, they are phony and they would take your man right before your eyes.

6. Women feel that other women divert attention away from them.

7. Women feel psychologically competitive with other women to be more attractive.

8. Women subconsciously believe that if they merely looked like another woman, they could inherit her life, her diamond, her man, and people would look at her with the same admiration.

The following dialogue was edited from a variety of websites discussing how women relate to each other:

Points to Ponder:

o You can never stop a man from looking at or admiring another woman's beauty. Do you really feel that another woman is more valuable as human being than you are simply because of her physical appearance?

o You are more than your physical body. What talents, gifts or skills do you have to contribute to society?

o You can not control what other people think of you. Once you truly accept the truth that you have no control over other people's thoughts about who you are or how you should live your life; you will be free to design your own life from the inside out.

o You can never compete with anyone but yourself.

o The only person who you can control is yourself...period.

o Whatever you seek in other people develop in yourself. You don't need to marry a doctor; become a doctor.

o You are the most important person in the world who must believe, acknowledge and recognize your own authentic and unique beauty. Why should anyone love and respect you more than you love and respect yourself.
